examples of similar woodland businesses demonstrating the viability of our
own plans.
- Ironbridge Woodland Products,
Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site - This site is managed with sustainability
as priority and supplies timber from it to local education and craft training
organizations, including the local CARE community, which caters for many
people with learning difficulties. They work by cutting the trees up and
seasoning it on site. Various craft and conservation products are then made
from the timber, and they are able to supply top quality woods and products
profitably because the trees are fully utilized on site.
- The Dunbeg Project, Tighnabruaigh,
Argyll - 12 ha, mainly conifers. pigs, fungi, other non-timber products,
education, added value timber products including furniture.
- Prickly Nut Wood, Lodsworth,
W. Sussex - 14 ha, SSSI. Green woodworking, charcoal, non-timber products,
tree nursery, craft courses, forest gardens, permaculture.
- Wilderness Wood, Hadlow
Down, Uckfield, E. Sussex (Since 1980). 61 acres, Employs husband and wife
team, several craftsmen and other staff. Education, public access, added
value timber products.
- Hill Holt Wood, Norton
Disney, Lincs. 13 ha, employs 15 people. Turnover £300,000 last year.
"Beacon of good enterprise" - DEFRA. Subject of Forestry Commission
funded and other studies. Now consulted by others wishing to start similar
woodland or rural enterprises. Social enterprise, workshop making wood products
on site, public access, provides training for young people etc as well as
countryside management.
- Steward Woodland, Moretonhampstead,
Devon. 14 ha co-operatively owned and provides a home and livelihood for
5 members and their families. Education, permaculture and other courses,
added value timber products, renewable energy, community resources and involvement.
