In theory, the plastic tree protectors fitted to new plantings protect against animal and insect attack. If the tree survives it will split the protector, but all too often the protectors, known universally as 'tree coffins' cause the trees to rot and die

And all that is left is an empty 'protector'. They need to be removed as soon as possible
